ENGIE has commenced civil engineering works for the construction of eight new wind turbines in the port of Zeebrugge, adding a total capacity of 42.6 MW.
The port of Zeebrugge is set to welcome eight new wind turbines, with construction commencing this month thanks to ENGIE. These installations, representing a combined power of 42.6 MW, will be spread across three distinct sites within the port area. Three of them will be erected on the grounds of the Wallenius Wilhelmsen RoRo terminal, while the other five will be located at International Car Operators (ICO) facilities. This latter site already hosts a wind farm of 11 turbines (44 MW) commissioned in 2020 by ENGIE in partnership with ICO and Portfineco.
Zeebrugge's skyline will change in the second half of 2027 with the assembly of the masts, nacelles, and blades. From early 2028, these new turbines are expected to generate approximately 115 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, equivalent to the average electricity consumption of about 33,000 households over the same period.
This large-scale project is the result of a joint investment between ENGIE, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and Portfineco. ENGIE will be responsible for the operational management of the turbines on behalf of the joint project company Seagull I.

"Port of Antwerp-Bruges is pleased to see that, with our local and Flemish public partners as well as our private partner ENGIE, we have managed to realize considerable additional wind capacity on three of our port terminals. We are thus well on track to surpass, by 2030, the symbolic milestone of half a gigawatt of installed wind capacity on our platforms. The share of port wind energy in our energy supply is therefore continuously gaining importance."
“
"With 217 operational wind turbines on Belgian soil, representing a total capacity of 611 MW, ENGIE significantly contributes to the renewable electricity supply for Belgian industry and households. To continue expanding our renewable electricity production capacity, we prioritize large-scale projects in suitable areas, such as port and industrial zones, which are of great importance to the Belgian economy. Through this project, we are strengthening Zeebrugge's role as an energy hub for the region."

"As a partner of Port of Antwerp-Bruges within Portfineco, Zefier is particularly pleased to participate in this project. We remain convinced of the need to develop renewable energy that benefits all citizens and wish to continue our commitment on behalf of our 160 shareholder municipalities. We are happy to find allies in ENGIE and Port of Antwerp-Bruges in this endeavor."
The project will include 8 wind turbines spread across 3 sites. At Wallenius Wilhelmsen, three Vestas V150-6.0 MW turbines, with a rotor diameter of 150 meters and a blade height of 200 meters, will be installed. At the International Car Operators sites, two turbines of the same model (V150-6.0 MW) will be deployed, complemented by three Vestas V136-4.2 MW turbines, featuring a rotor diameter of 136 meters and a blade height of 180 meters.
