The new Bpost distribution center in Maldegem became operational on Monday, September 28. This 7,930 m² site is specifically adapted to the current demands of the parcel market. It will allow 39 postal workers to start their daily routes, handling approximately 3,000 parcels destined for the municipalities of Aalter, Sint-Laureins, and Maldegem.
The facility includes a modern hall of nearly 2,000 m² for route preparation and sorting, along with over 5,000 m² dedicated to parking and loading/unloading zones. Forty-four charging stations are available for the postal workers' electric vans and bicycles.
This opening is part of Bpost's investment strategy in the parcel market. Over the past twelve months, the company has already commissioned three new or renovated distribution centers, including those in Charleroi (new construction of 6,350 m²) and Sint-Niklaas (renovation of 3,186 m²).
The new Maldegem center is designed to be energy-neutral, featuring 620 solar panels that cover its electricity consumption, saving 218 tonnes of CO₂ annually compared to the former sites. It is also equipped with smart lighting, energy-efficient cooling techniques, a rainwater harvesting system, and a sorting and recycling plan.
These efforts align with Bpost's ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It is clarified that a distribution center is not a post office and is not accessible to the public; the post offices in Maldegem and Aalter remain at their current locations.
